The Necessity Of An Auto Body Shop To Fix Vehicle Corrosion

Posted on: 25 January 2016

A big problem for vehicles is corrosion. There are many different things that cause rust, but one of the most common is salt. In order for the roads to be drivable during the winter, salt and sand are poured onto the roads. This allows us to get from place to place, but takes a serious toll on your vehicle. Our vehicles are made out of iron, and as you may remember from chemistry class, iron and oxygen combine to form iron oxide. This is just a fancy name for rust. When water and salt are involved the chemical reaction occurs faster. So, when driving in icy conditions do not forget to take your car to the carwash. If you see rust develop on your car, be proactive. Rust will spread, and thus it is important to do something about it as soon as possible. This is a great time to take your car to an auto body repair shop.

The Repair-Surface Rust

There are a lot of people that try to fix a rust spot by themselves. There are things that can help stop rust, but in order to completely get rid of the problem, taking your vehicle to the auto body repair shop is the answer. If you are lucky and you spotted the rust in time, the rust will be found only on the surface. An auto body repair shop will be able to sand the rust out of the vehicle and repaint the car. The technicians that work in auto body repair shops will be able to do this very quickly, and it will save you money in the long run.

A Rust Out

Now, if the rust has had the opportunity to settle in then it will be throughout the iron of your car. There are two different ways that this can be fixed. You will need to make sure that the auto body shop knows exactly what you want. There is a short term and a long term solution for a rust out. The fast way to fix the problem is by trimming out the rust and filling it with bondo. The bondo can be sanded and repainted. This is a good fix, but may not completely solve the problem in the long run. The long term fix is to get entirely new panels. This is obviously more expensive, but the iron will not rust out.
